About that cord. The Badger 5 on the shelf at the home center usually comes without a power cord, which people tend to discover after they have the box open and the old unit already out. Ours comes with the cord attached and installed by a licensed plumber, so there is no second trip to the store in the middle of the job.
Is it worth replacing, or can it be fixed?
Not every dead disposal needs replacing, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one. Try the two easy things first:
- Nothing at all when you flip the switch. Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. Overloads trip it and the reset often brings it right back.
- Humming but not turning. Usually something is jammed. Cut the power at the switch, then work the hex wrench that came with the unit into the slot in the bottom center and turn it back and forth to free the plate.
These are the signs that mean it is genuinely time for a new one:
- Water dripping from the body of the disposal itself, not the connections. A cracked housing cannot be repaired
- Heavy rust or corrosion on the unit
- Metal on metal grinding or rattling that does not stop after clearing a jam
- It trips the reset repeatedly, even on small loads
- Food no longer grinds down the way it used to
- Odor that keeps coming back no matter how you clean it
If yours is leaking at the sink flange rather than the body, that is a mounting or gasket issue and sometimes a much smaller repair. Call us and we will tell you which one you have. Our garbage disposal and appliance page covers the repair side.
Will the Badger 5 fit what I have?
Usually, and the answer depends on what is under your sink right now.
- Replacing an InSinkErator. The Badger 5 uses the Quick Lock mount, so it twists onto the mounting assembly already in your sink. Fastest possible swap
- Replacing a different brand. Other manufacturers use their own mounting systems, so the sink flange assembly usually has to be changed out too. That is a specialty flange and is not part of this flat rate. Tell us the brand when we call and we will price it before your appointment
- No disposal there now. A first time installation needs a new sink flange, drain reconfiguration, and often an electrical switch and outlet, so it is not covered by this price. Call us for a quote
Not sure what you have? Open the cabinet, take a photo of the unit and the label on it, and send it to [email protected] or call (352) 726-5601. Thirty seconds of your time saves a surprise on install day.
Disposals and septic systems
A lot of Citrus County homes are on septic, so this comes up on nearly every disposal call. The Badger 5 is rated septic safe for a properly maintained system. The catch is the phrase properly maintained. A disposal adds solids to the tank, which means the tank fills faster and needs pumping more often than it would otherwise.
If you are on septic and you use a disposal daily, plan on shorter pumping intervals and go easy on what you put down it. If you are not sure whether a plumbing problem is yours or the tank's, our page on whether you need a plumber or a septic contractor sorts that out.

InSinkErator backs the Badger 5 with a 3 year We Come to You in-home limited warranty, which covers parts and labor in your kitchen rather than making you box the unit up and ship it somewhere. Our one year workmanship warranty sits on top of that.
Half a horsepower handles everyday scraps for most households. If you cook constantly, run a big family kitchen, or want something quieter, there are larger and better insulated models. Call us and we will quote one rather than leaving you to guess.
Getting years out of it
Disposals fail for predictable reasons, and most of them come down to what goes in and how much water is running.
Do
- Run cold water the whole time and for a few seconds after
- Feed scraps in gradually rather than all at once
- Cut the power at the switch before reaching in for anything
Skip
- Grease and cooking oil, which cool and coat the drain line
- Bones and seafood shells
- Celery, corn husks, and other stringy vegetables
- Coffee grounds and eggshells in quantity
- Anything that is not food
Grease is the one we see most. It goes down warm and hardens somewhere out in the line, and then it becomes a drain cleaning call instead of a disposal call. Pour it into a can and throw it away.
Common questions about garbage disposal replacement
How much does garbage disposal installation cost in Citrus County?
Our flat rate is $359 installed. That covers the $55 service call, up to 90 minutes of labor, the InSinkErator Badger 5 with the cord attached, standard mounting components, removal and haul away of the old unit, and leak testing. The price is quoted before we start and it is on your itemized invoice.
My disposal hums but will not turn. Do I need a new one?
Not necessarily. Humming usually means something is jammed rather than the motor being dead. Cut the power at the switch, then use the hex wrench that came with the unit in the slot underneath and work it back and forth to free the plate. Then press the red reset button. If it frees up and runs normally, you are fine. If it jams again quickly or grinds metal on metal, it is worn out.
Will the Badger 5 fit my existing sink mount?
If your current disposal is an InSinkErator, yes. The Badger 5 uses the Quick Lock mount and twists onto the assembly already in your sink. If you have a different brand, the mounting assembly usually has to be replaced too, which is a specialty flange and not part of this flat rate. Tell us the brand when we call and we will price it beforehand.
Is a garbage disposal safe with a septic system?
The Badger 5 is rated septic safe for a properly maintained system. A disposal does add solids to the tank, so the tank fills faster and needs pumping more often than it would without one. If you are on septic in Citrus County and use the disposal daily, plan on shorter pumping intervals.
Does the disposal come with a power cord?
Yes. The unit we supply has the cord attached. The version sold at home centers often does not include one, which people usually discover after the old unit is already out.
What warranty comes with it?
Two layers. InSinkErator covers the Badger 5 with a 3 year We Come to You in-home limited warranty on parts and labor, meaning a covered failure gets handled at your house rather than by shipping the unit off. On top of that, Modern Plumbing warranties our own workmanship on the installation for one year.
Do I need an electrician?
Not for a standard swap. We plug the new unit into the existing switched outlet under the sink. If the switch, outlet, or wiring is dead, damaged, or missing, that is electrical work outside our license and we will tell you what we found.
What if my dishwasher drains through the disposal?
We reconnect it. A new disposal ships with the dishwasher inlet plugged, and we knock that plug out before hooking up the hose, which is the step most do it yourself installs miss. If the hose itself is cracked, clogged, or badly routed, replacing it is separate work and we will show you before doing anything.
How long does the installation take?
Most straight replacements are done in under 90 minutes, including running the unit and checking the connections for leaks.
Do you take the old disposal away?
Yes. Removal and disposal of the old unit is included in the $359.
What if I do not have a disposal now?
A first time installation needs a new sink flange, some drain reconfiguration, and usually a switch and outlet added, so it is not covered by this flat rate. Call us at (352) 726-5601 and we will quote it for your kitchen.
Standard conditions and what is not included
We would rather be upfront than surprise you on the invoice. The $359 assumes we are replacing one existing garbage disposal in an accessible kitchen sink cabinet, during regular business hours, inside our Citrus County service area, where the sink opening, mounting system, drain alignment, and switched outlet are all compatible and in working order. The booked scope has to match the photos and details you give us.
Not included unless we quote it separately:
- Specialty flanges or a new mounting assembly for a different brand
- First time installation where no disposal exists
- Electrical switch, outlet, circuit, or breaker work
- Any work requiring a licensed electrician
- Sink or faucet replacement
- Replacing damaged or corroded drain piping
- Drain reconfiguration
- Sink basket or unrelated drain assembly replacement
- Clearing a clogged kitchen drain or sewer line
- Retrieving objects lodged farther down the piping
- Dishwasher repair or drain hose replacement
- Cabinet, countertop, flooring, or drywall repairs
- Unrelated plumbing or electrical code corrections
- Permit or inspection fees
One thing worth saying plainly: a new disposal will not fix a slow or backed up kitchen drain. If the sink was draining poorly before, it will drain poorly after, and that is a separate drain cleaning visit. If we find that during the install, we will show you and give you the price before doing anything else.
Warranty coverage does not extend to damage from improper use, foreign objects, grease, drain clogs, electrical problems, flooding, corrosion, unauthorized repairs, appliance defects, or plumbing outside the work we performed.
