Our approach: how a family-owned Citrus County plumbing company works
Modern Plumbing Services is a family-owned plumbing company based in Inverness, Florida, serving homeowners and businesses throughout Citrus County. Our family has served this community since 1978.
Over nearly five decades, plumbing technology, products, homes, and the way customers find service companies have all changed. Our basic approach has not: do good work, be fair with people, stand behind what we do, take care of our employees, and support our community.
We do not only want to be a great plumber for our customers. We want Modern Plumbing to be a meaningful part of the Citrus County community. That philosophy shapes how we price our work, how our plumbers talk with customers, how we choose products, and how we run our company. If you want the shorter version, our about page covers the family history and why choose Modern lays out the practical differences.
Modern Plumbing Services is a family-owned plumbing contractor in Inverness, Florida, operating since 1978 under Florida license #CFC1431599. We are now in our third generation. We publish our service rates online, we do not use commission-based plumbers, we give itemized invoices, and we repair when repair is practical. We serve Inverness, Hernando, Lecanto, Beverly Hills, Crystal River, Homosassa, Floral City, Citrus Springs, and surrounding communities.
We prioritize relationships over transactions
We believe a plumbing customer is more valuable as a long-term relationship than as a single service call. Our goal is not to maximize the value of today's invoice. Our goal is to become the plumber a customer trusts enough to call again and to recommend to family, friends, and neighbors.
For us, that means:
- clearly explaining plumbing problems and the available solutions
- providing straightforward pricing and scope information
- avoiding unnecessary repairs or replacements
- giving customers practical options when options exist
- communicating what is and is not included before work begins
- standing behind our workmanship with a written warranty
- treating customers and their homes with respect
We would rather earn someone's trust for the next twenty years than maximize the value of one service call. You can see how that has worked out in our recent projects and customer reviews.
Plumbers, not salespeople
Modern Plumbing does not believe a service plumber should walk into someone's home looking for ways to raise a sales ticket. Our plumbers are there to solve plumbing problems.
We do not structure our service model around commission-based plumbers whose income depends on how much they sell to each customer. Removing that pressure keeps the conversation where it belongs: what does the customer actually need? Our Modern difference comparison shows how this looks next to a typical commission-driven service model.
Sometimes the best solution is replacement. Sometimes it is a repair. Sometimes a homeowner in Inverness or Crystal River has several reasonable options. Our responsibility is to explain those options clearly enough for the customer to make an informed decision.
Straightforward plumbing pricing
We believe customers should understand what they are paying for, which is why our rates are posted publicly rather than quoted only at the door. Our current published rate is $95 per hour for labor with a one-hour minimum, plus a $55 service call, billed in fifteen-minute increments after the first hour. Larger projects like water heater replacement and whole home repipes get free estimates. You can review everything on our service rates page.
For qualifying common services we also offer flat-rate options that clearly identify what is included, and several are available for purchase directly through our online scheduling page. Current discounts for seniors, veterans, and online booking are posted publicly too.
Our philosophy is simple. The scope of the work and the price should be understandable before the customer approves the job. When additional work is discovered outside the original scope, we believe it should be discussed with the homeowner rather than quietly added to the bill.
- ✓ A licensed plumber who explains the problem in plain language
- ✓ Repair and replacement options where both are reasonable
- ✓ Published pricing and scope explained before the work is approved
- ✓ An itemized invoice, so you can see what you paid for
- ✓ No commission-based sales pressure
- ✓ Common parts stocked on the truck for first-visit completion
- ✓ Work backed by our workmanship warranty
We believe repair is still a valuable skill
Modern Plumbing installs new plumbing fixtures and equipment, but replacement is not automatically our first recommendation. We are still plumbers who believe in repairing plumbing when repair is practical, safe, and economically reasonable. A faucet cartridge, a shower valve, a toilet fill valve, or a hose bib can often be repaired for a fraction of what a replacement costs.
That distinction matters. A plumbing company needs technicians who understand how systems work, not simply how to swap components. When replacement makes more sense, we will explain why. Our guide on how to choose a water heater is a good example of the reasoning we walk customers through, and our water heater FAQ answers the questions that come up most often.
Products we are comfortable putting our name behind
A plumbing installation is only as good as the workmanship and the products being installed. Modern Plumbing works with established plumbing manufacturers and professional-grade products that we believe provide good long-term value. We regularly install and service products from A. O. Smith, American Standard, Rinnai, InSinkErator, Sloan, Zurn, and other established plumbing brands.
We stock A. O. Smith ProLine electric water heaters and American Standard comfort-height toilets so most of those jobs can be finished on the first visit rather than turning into a second appointment. We also handle A. O. Smith commercial water heater repair and replacement.
We also believe customers deserve to understand the difference between simply buying a product and buying a professionally installed plumbing solution. A complete installation may include fittings, connections, installation materials, testing, removal of the existing equipment, cleanup, and warranty considerations. Those details matter, and if you supply your own equipment we will install it, as with our owner-supplied water heater installation.
Great customer service starts with great employees
We believe the way customers are treated is directly connected to the way employees are treated. A company cannot reasonably expect patience, craftsmanship, honesty, and professionalism from employees while treating those employees as disposable.
We want Modern Plumbing to be a company where good plumbers and good people can build careers. Our goal is for an employee to be proud to say, "I work for Modern Plumbing." When employees care about the company whose name is on their shirt, and the company cares about the people wearing those shirts, customers are the ones who benefit. If you are a plumber in Citrus County looking for that kind of shop, take a look at our employment page.
Local means more than having a local phone number
Modern Plumbing is based in Inverness and primarily serves Citrus County, Florida. We have a page for each community we work in, including Inverness, Hernando, Lecanto, Beverly Hills, Crystal River, Homosassa, Floral City, Citrus Springs, Inglis, Dunnellon, Bushnell, Brooksville, and Wildwood.
This is not simply a service territory on a map. It is our home. Our family attended local schools. We shop at local businesses. Our employees and our customers live here. We drive the same roads and take part in the same community.
That creates a different kind of responsibility. When you expect to see your customers again at the grocery store, a ball game, a school event, or a restaurant downtown, reputation becomes personal.
We want to contribute to Citrus County
Modern Plumbing does not only want to take business from the community. We want to contribute to it. That includes supporting local organizations, recognizing local teachers and schools, taking part in community initiatives, supporting other local businesses, helping families when the opportunity comes up, and using our platform to highlight some of the people who make Citrus County a good place to live.
We are a member of the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce and a Realtors Association of Citrus County business partner. Our neighbors voted us Citrus County Chronicle Best of the Best Plumber for 2026 and a Nextdoor 2025 Neighborhood Favorite. Recognition like that means the most coming from the community we have served since 1978.
Community involvement is not separate from our business philosophy. It is part of it. A local company should leave its community better than it found it. We write about that side of the business on The Modern Plumber blog.
Nearly five decades of local plumbing history
Modern Plumbing has served Citrus County since 1978. That history matters to us because longevity creates responsibility. Over the years, our company has served multiple generations of Citrus County families. In some cases, the grandparents who once called Modern Plumbing have children and grandchildren who call us today.
Every generation of our company inherits more than equipment, customers, and a business name. It inherits a reputation. That reputation was built one service call, one repair, one employee, one customer, and one handshake at a time. Protecting it is one of our most important responsibilities. There is more of the family story on our about page.
Three generations of Citrus County plumbers
| Generation | Role in the company |
|---|---|
| Frank Lewis, founder | Founded Modern Plumbing in 1978 and built the company on honesty, quality workmanship, and customer relationships. |
| James Lewis, second generation | Continued the family tradition while helping Modern Plumbing become a trusted Citrus County name. |
| Curtis Lewis, third generation | Born in Inverness at Citrus Memorial Hospital and a graduate of Citrus High School. Active in the community and committed to the family values the company was built on. |
Modern technology, old-fashioned accountability
We believe a company can modernize without abandoning the principles that made it successful. Today, customers may find Modern Plumbing through Google, read reviews online, research plumbing problems with artificial intelligence, purchase qualifying services online, and schedule appointments any hour of the day. Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but the scheduling page never closes.
We embrace technology when it makes plumbing service easier, clearer, or more convenient. But technology should improve customer service rather than replace accountability. Whether someone finds us through an internet search or a recommendation from their grandmother, our obligation is the same. Show up. Understand the problem. Explain the options. Charge fairly. Do quality work. Stand behind it.
What we want the name Modern Plumbing to mean
Our long-term goal is not simply to run more trucks or complete more service calls. Growth matters because a healthy company can employ more people, serve more customers, invest in better equipment, and contribute more to its community. But growth by itself is not the goal.
We want Modern Plumbing to become synonymous with trustworthy local plumbing service in Citrus County. We hope customers describe us with something even more meaningful than "they're good plumbers." We hope they say, "they're good people." The first statement describes the quality of our work. The second describes the kind of company we are trying to build.
That is our approach.
